Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day caught me by surprise. That's how I remember Mir best, flying along below.

He was the closest thing to an uncle I'll ever have. I miss him.

Mir's contributions to the exploration of space will never be forgotten. He knew that, when he deorbited in fiery splendor. And just maybe, somewhere in the infinitely surprising universe, some spark of Mir's pioneering spirit is waiting to see us take the next step, and the next...

Aw man, that's kinda depressing. I doubt there's anyone who knew him that doesn't miss him. He had the greatest stories, woulda loved LJ.

Thanks K. *soft pulses* You have him to thank for me being who I am. He was a heck of a fine spacecraft.

Theres a great interview with Rick Tumlinson of MirCorp archived at The Space Show.
http://www.thespaceshow.com/detail.asp?q=179

He talks about how Mircorp leased the Mir and paid for the last mission. Sadly, Mircorp was ready to use an electromagnetic tether to boost Mir to a higher orbit but NASA via the State department used ITAR to block the use of the tether.

IMHO, Mir was murdered by NASA management to avoid embarrassment as the ISS budget spirals to $100 billion

Whoa, neat bit of technology, and cryin' shame about Mir.

I wonder if the tether would work using the solar magnetic field, no reason why it shouldn't I guess [except maybe the field is too weak perhaps]. Heck of a drive system though, if a tad slow on the acceleration. [but then so's an ion drive.]
